A federal grand jury in Durham, North Carolina, returned an indictment yesterday charging a tax preparer with conspiring to defraud the United States, preparing false tax returns, filing a false personal tax return, and committing aggravated identity theft, announced Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin for the Middle District of North Carolina.

FBI Requests Public Assistance to Identify Scripps Ranch Bank Robber

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force is seeking the public’s assistance to identify the individual believed to be responsible for a bank robbery in San Diego, California.

On January 7, 2021, at approximately 12:20 p.m., a man entered the U.S. Bank, located at 10020 Scripps Ranch Boulevard, San Diego, California. The robber approached an open teller window and presented the teller with a handwritten note demanding money. The teller complied with the robber’s demand and provided him with a sum of cash. After receiving the cash, the robber fled the scene in a white sedan.

Description of Robber:

  • Sex: Male
  • Race: White
  • Age: Approximately 20s
  • Build: Skinny
  • Height: Approximately 5’8” to 5’10” tall
  • Clothing: Dark colored beanie hat, dark untucked button-up collared shirt, light blue jeans, and a dark colored bandana over his face
  • Weapon: None seen

Security News in Brief: Justice Department Settles with New Jersey-Based IT Consulting Company to Resolve Immigration-Related Discrimination Claims

The Department of Justice announced today that it reached a settlement with Quantum Integrators Group (Quantum), an IT consulting and staffing company based in New Jersey. The settlement resolves claims that Quantum (1) discriminated against a lawful permanent resident by requiring her, based on her citizenship status, to provide unnecessary documentation before it would refer her for an employment opportunity, and (2) routinely required other work-authorized non-U.S. citizens to present unnecessary documents to prove their eligibility to work.

Omaha Man Arrested for Actions at U.S. Capitol

On Monday, January 25, 2021, agents from the FBI Omaha Field Office arrested Brandon Straka on a federal warrant related to events at the Capitol Building on January 6. Straka, of Omaha, faces the following federal charges:

  1. impeding law enforcement officer during civil disorder
  2. knowingly entering and remaining on restricted grounds without lawful authority and/or engaging in disorderly conduct within proximity to a restricted building to impede official functions
  3. engaging in disorderly conduct with intent to disturb a hearing before Congress
