NORFOLK, Va. The asymmetrical steel slab with its crimson and blue background looms over USS New York’s (LPD 19) amphibious well deck. Like the city it came from, it is a visual presence impossible to ignore. Its creator, Richard Othmer, meant it to be so. With help from several others, the retired New York City fireman, recovered the symbolic steel from the remnants of Ground Zero and engraved upon it the names of all first responders who gave their lives to rescue those trapped inside the World Trade Center towers.

Sharing the lessons of 9/11 – honoring the lives of those lost and the courage and bravery of the first responders who tirelessly worked to save lives – is a critical part of training at Recruit Training Command. Learning about the resilience and fortitude shown by Americans allows future Sailors to understand the virtues of service, sacrifice, and selflessness that have been the source of America’s strength.

SUITLAND, Md. – On Sept. 10, 2021, families, friends, and colleagues gathered at the National Maritime Intelligence Center (NMIC) to mark the 20th anniversary of the loss of eight Naval Intelligence shipmates serving at the Chief of Naval Operations Intelligence Plot (CNO-IP) during the attacks on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Matthew Coyle, a Sailor assigned to USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), is too young to personally remember that day. However, several of his family members exhibited true selflessness and bravery at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and their bold actions continue to inspire Coyle in his naval career.
