Defense News in Brief: U.S. Navy, Coast Guard Tansit Taiwan Strait

TAIWAN STRAIT – The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG 100) and legend-class U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter Munro (WMSL 755) conducted routine Taiwan Strait transits Aug. 27 (local time) through international waters in accordance with international law. The ships’ lawful transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows.

Defense News in Brief: Sailor Among Those Killed in Kabul Attack

WASHINGTON – One Sailor was killed during the August 26 attack at the Abbey gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.  We mourn the loss of this Sailor and we offer our deepest condolences to the loved ones of our fallen shipmate. The name of the Sailor will be released 24 hours after notification of next of kin.

WASHINGTON – Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) successfully conducted a test of the Second Stage Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) on August 25th in Promontory, Utah as part of the development of the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) offensive hypersonic strike capability and the Army’s Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW).

Defense News in Brief: Recruit Performance Divisions Return to RTC’s Pass-In-Review: Flag Division

Recruit Training Command (RTC) returned to in-person guest attendance at graduation Aug. 13, 2021, for the first time in 17 months, and with that came the return of performing divisions, sometimes better known as 900 divisions. Performing divisions are comprised of recruits in training who were selected upon arrival to boot camp to assist with graduations. They are divided into staff divisions, state flag divisions, and triple threat divisions, which is comprised of the band, choir, and drill team.
