Defense News in Brief: Holidays Made Merrier After NEX Layaway Balances Paid

Military families at several NEX locations had an early holiday surprise when their layaway balances were paid off. In all, 700 families at NEX Norfolk, Virginia; NEX San Diego; NEX Pearl Harbor; NEX Charleston, South Carolina; and NEX Orlando, Florida, had their layaway balances totaling nearly $133,000 paid by the non-profit organization Pay Away the Layaway, Inc.

Defense News in Brief: USS Milwaukee Remains in Port as Sailors Test Positive for COVID-19

NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY — USS Milwaukee (LCS 5), a Freedom variant littoral combat ship, remains in port as some Sailors test positive for COVID-19. The crew is 100% immunized and all COVID-19 positive Sailors are isolated onboard and away from other crew members. A portion of those infected have exhibited mild symptoms. The vaccine continues to demonstrate effectiveness against serious illness.

WASHINGTON — On December 22, the 11th and final Advanced Weapons Elevator (AWE) aboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was turned over to the Ship’s Crew.  AWEs on this first-of-class aircraft carrier operate using several advanced technologies including electromagnetic motors vice more labor intensive, hydraulic systems.  The advanced technology enables fewer sailors to safely move ordnance from weapons magazines to the flight deck with unparalleled speed and agility.
