Defense News in Brief: 7th Fleet Conducts Freedom of Navigation Operation

On Sept. 8, USS Benfold (DDG 65) asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law. This freedom of navigation operation (“FONOP”) upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea. USS Benfold demonstrated that Mischief Reef, a low-tide elevation in its natural state, is not entitled to a territorial sea under international law.

Defense News in Brief: First All-Women Recruit Staff Division Dominates at RTC’s Boot Camp Graduation

For the first time in more than 20 years, the recruit staff division for the Navy’s only boot camp graduation consisted of all women.
While previously a division of all men performed the duties at the ceremony known as Pass-in-Review, the graduating women of Division 904 could be seen in the forefront Sept. 3, in Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Command (RTC).

Defense News in Brief: FRCE takes on new V-22 workload Depot providing Osprey maintenance for presidential support squadron

Fleet Readiness Center East has conducted modification and Planned Maintenance Interval (PMI) events for Navy and Marine Corps V-22 aircraft since 2009, when the depot inducted its first Osprey. Now, the facility will provide that same support to Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 (HMX-1). The HMX-1 “Nighthawks” fleet includes a number of “Green Top” MV-22B aircraft, which are all scheduled to receive PMI-2 service at FRCE in the coming months following the successful completion and early return of the first aircraft.
