NORFOLK, Va. – For years, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) Diesel Shop had been interested in implementing the Navy Afloat Maintenance Training Strategy (NAMTS) Diesel Engine, Governor and Injector Repair Technician Job Qualification Requirement (JQR). While hands-on work accomplishment is the driving force behind NAMTS JQR completion, it is beneficial to have mockup or simulation opportunities available for the Sailor’s initial observation of the equipment on which they will be working.

TAIWAN STRAIT – The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG 100) and legend-class U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter Munro (WMSL 755) conducted routine Taiwan Strait transits Aug. 27 (local time) through international waters in accordance with international law. The ships’ lawful transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows.

Military Sealift Command’s Special Mission program supports worldwide oceanographic programs with six ships that perform acoustical, biological, physical and geophysical surveys. These ships gather data that provides much of the military’s information on the ocean environment. The collected data helps to improve technology in undersea warfare and enemy ship detection. The oceanographic and hydrographic survey ships’ multibeam, wide-angle precision sonar systems make it possible to continuously chart a broad strip of ocean floor. Survey ships have charted three-fourths of the world’s coastlines, making it easier for navigators to find their way along both well-traveled and not-so-familiar shipping routes.
